It has been a fabulous week for the young-at-heart at Asia’s largest toy fair, strolling down the aisles of the HKTDC Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair, the HKTDC Hong Kong Baby Products Fair and Hong Kong International Stationery Fair together at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre. As the events wind down, don’t miss the opportunity to source the latest products, hear next-gen ideas, network with key players and take advantage of the latest industry trends in 2017 and beyond. |
Global Trends in STEM Toys |
|
For many parents, the ideal toy for their children should not only be engaging and fun but also educational, learning-based and challenging. STEM toys are exactly these things as they enhance skills in science, engineering and mathematics, aid physical and mental development while being both fun and beneficial to academic performance. As parents learn more and more about childhood education, STEM toys have surged in popularity to become a major factor for retailers and manufacturers. At the Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair, industry buyers and key players can take a first-hand look at the future of learning-based toys that tick all the right boxes in the arena of child development. |

Marek Jankowski, Editor-in-chief of the Polish trade magazine Branza Dziecieca
Visiting fairs, I always look for new trends and try to find product groups that are likely to grow in the following months or even years. Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair, as the biggest show of its kind in Asia, is a perfect opportunity to spot them.
Based on what I have seen so far at the fair, I think that two factors driving sales in the nearest future will be sport and technology.
Although traditional sports equipment has always been well received, toy producers go the extra mile and search for new ways to combine physical activity with fun. They do by improving and enhancing well-known products, or sometimes designing new ones from the scratch. Children want to play and be accepted by peers – sports toys help them achieve both goals.
On the other hand, we are surrounded by more and more tech toys. Robots, drones and virtual reality are no longer science-fiction. They are available even to young kids. What are the implications? Firstly, the staff in toy shops must learn about those products to be able to sell them. Secondly, more and more toys will be sold by electronics stores. Electronics can bring the play to a higher level and is already doing it. |

Daniele Caroli, Editor-in-chief of the Italian baby care products trade magazine Il Giornale dell’Infanzia
In the car seat category, one of the main trends is providing functional products which follow the child’s growth. Evenflo’s SafeMax succeeds in this without compromising with the little passenger’s protection. Featuring an integrated steel frame and an innovative Safe Zone headrest, it has passed the rollover-test and includes the Parentlink Premier service and free live video installation support.
Foppapedretti’s iWood travel system sports a wood and aluminum frame which gives it a refined look while functionality is preserved: it has received the Best of the Fair award in the Strollers and Gear category.
A new bottle by Nuvita, Air.55, available in three sizes, makes it easier for the baby to move back to breastfeeding thanks to its shape and to a specially designed long and flat teat.
Haenim’s Baby Bottle Sterilizer employs UV light, which boasts excellent sterilizing power, and far infrared rays for drying its contents: it can store up to 16 baby bottles.
The Aleva Naturals 2-in-1 Hair & Body Wash comes in a self-foaming bottle which allows children to learn to do it by themselves without making a mess thanks to the design of the pump, which avoids spill and waste.

“Established in 1952 in Japan, Kawada is a manufacturer and wholesaler of micro-sized block toys under the nanoblock brand. This is our first year at the Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair to promote our brand and let international buyers know that Kawada is the original manufacturer of nanoblock because there are so many similar products in the market. Through the fair, we are keen to expand our sales channels and look for new distributors. We have made a lot of new contacts from our target markets including buyers from the Chinese mainland, Europe, Korea, Israel and Taiwan. The Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair is an important showcase for our products and a brand promotion platform as it is a big show that attracts many international buyers from different parts of the world.”

“We have more than 20 years of experience in producing plastic injection products. Currently, we focus on producing AR toys which are popular items in the market. This is our fourth time participation in the Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair, which is also the only toys trade show that we have joined. As Asia’s largest toys fair, the Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair is the place where we can establish contacts with different buyers. Our main goal of joining the fair is to promote our OEM and ODM capabilities in the production of plastic injection products. At the fair, we are promoting Hoku Warriors, a new breed game that has incorporated AR elements and GPS function. The appealing design of Hoku Warriors has attracted the attention of many buyers including those from the Chinese mainland, India, Japan and Korea. We’ll follow up after the fair.”

“Winning Moves is a designer, manufacturer and distributor of the world’s hottest licensed games, such as Monopoly, Cluedo, Guess Who, Connect Four and Operation. Winning Moves’ own brands include Pass The Pigs and Top Trumps. At the Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair, I am keen to look for new brands, to diversify into new product categories such as electronic games, remote-controlled cars and role-playing games, and to find new products which are unavailable in the Australian market. So far, I have found potential suppliers of drones and remote-controlled cars. It’s great to be here to see a lot of new products and new ideas developed by suppliers. The Brand Name Gallery is a good place for me to look for new brands. It’s a worthwhile trip.”

“Kinderland is the exclusive distributor of Bruder toys in Brazil and sells toys to retailers and consumers through its online store. Bruder is a German toy brand and we are going to launch two other German toy brands in 2017. I am visiting the Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair for the first time to look for new partners, new brands and new products. At the fair, I am interested in two new brands for STEM toys and 3D puzzles and it’s likely that we’ll bring them to the Brazilian market. Due to high import taxes in Brazil, our company focuses on high-quality and innovative toys as consumers are willing to pay more for this kind of products. I have found innovative products at the Hong Kong fair. It’s a fantastic experience. I’ll definitely come back next year.”

K-Tots: The Best from Korea |
At last year’s Hong Kong Baby Products Fair, the hugely successful debut by Korean companies served as an excellent example of the marketing power at this prestigious industry event. The Korea Pavilion returns this year with an even bigger contingent of over 30 companies as they present renowned brands such as i-angel (baby carrier), Dwinguler (playmat), DAIICHI (strollers), Takos (teething products) and more! |

“Pali is a well-known baby product brand in Italy with a long history. We have been in operation since 1919, providing a wide range of quality wooden cots, strollers and highchairs. We had visited Hong Kong Baby Products Fair in the past year and successfully found good suppliers and partners. This is our debut as an exhibitor at the fair to promote our brand. Highlights include our made-in-Italy baby cots as well strollers and a new multi-functional highchair series. The feedback has been excellent. We’ve got a lot of new contacts. Five orders were already concluded with new buyers from Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Lebanon and the Chinese mainland, involving one container of products each. This is a very good start. The Hong Kong fair can really drive our expansion in Asia. We will exhibit again next year and hopefully take up a bigger booth to showcase our products.”

“Capella is a baby stroller brand from Korea committed to providing modern and fashionable products to bring extra comfort and care for babies. We have been participating in Hong Kong Baby Products Fair for several years. We are launching our new stroller series at the fair this year. The new model comes with a more comfortable seat, lighter weight and a more compact design to cater to the needs of customers. Other products on offer include hipseat carriers, mother bags and accessories. Competition is keen and we work continuously to enhance our design to stand out in the market. This fair is a good place to showcase and promote our latest offerings. We are in touch with some new buyers from different places such as India, Israel and Argentina for business development. A number of existing customers have also visited our booth to see our new designs and discuss orders for the coming year. This fair offers an important platform to build the brand and raise our presence. We will continue to exhibit here.”

“MyMedia is operating feedo.cz, the biggest e-commerce business specialising in the sale of baby products in Czech Republic. We have extended our e-tailing presence to Slovak Republic, Poland and Ukraine. Our main products are diapers and baby food, plus various baby gears and accessories. This is our first visit to Hong Kong Baby Products Fair. We have found many interesting products available at highly competitive prices. So far, we have met with over 200 exhibitors. We expect to conclude business with at least 15 new suppliers from different places including Hong Kong, Chinese mainland, Korea and USA for a selection of items like diapers, breast pads, milk temperature monitors, strollers and car seats. We are waiting for the pricing details. If everything goes smoothly, we intend to spend about US$1 million for a good range of products from different suppliers. This is a fantastic opportunity to come here for sourcing. We highly recommend this fair.”

“P.T. Bilna is a leading e-tailer specialising in baby products in Indonesia. A majority of our branded products are sourced through local distributors. To increase our competitiveness, we are now planning to launch our own brand. I am visiting Hong Kong Baby Products Fair for the second time. I have already found four new suppliers from Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland, Korea and Malaysia. The Korean supplier’s baby socks and the Malaysian exhibitor’s rubber cot sheets are both attractive. I will place orders of 500 sets each after studying the pricing and shipping details. Further negotiation will be conducted with the Hong Kong supplier for baby clothing and soft toys and with the Chinese mainland supplier for blankets and bedding items. This fair has a lot on offer. I am particularly interested in suppliers who show flexibility in MOQ and accept small-sized orders.”
